A leading blood cancer charity has an exciting opportunity for you to join its leadership team as an Assistant Director of Laboratory Operations. As part of this world-class team you’ll work alongside leading specialists and highly-motivated people, passionate about saving lives.  As Assistant Director, you will be on the front line of their lifesaving work and need to have the passion and operational expertise to continue driving their pioneering lab work forward.

Job Profile:

To provide leadership, management and coordination for all activities specifically designed to deliver the laboratory work. You will be responsible for translating strategy in to operational objectives across the Laboratories and ensuring all activities are delivered to a high standard. You will work closely with the Clinical Director of the H and I Lab to ensure all clinical and scientific objectives are delivered in line with the strategy.  You will work collaboratively across the company, developing excellent relationships that strengthen the aims of the charity. 

Key Responsibilities


These include but are not limited to:

  • To provide leadership, direction and expertise to drive forward the aims and objectives of the company in line with SLA’s..
  • Translate strategy and the business plan into operational objectives and create a shared sense of purpose across teams by demonstrating how different work contributes to higher level divisional and organisational objectives. 
  • Ensure the provision of a high quality, reliable and responsive service to achieve customer targets and turnaround times, ensuring all processes and procedures are further developed to optimise excellent and efficient service delivery.
  • Proactively monitor changes in the environment and ensure on-going compliance with legislation, quality, regulatory and accreditation requirements
  • Build constructive and on-going relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Represent the company when required (e.g. media interviews, conferences, seminars)
  • Create a culture of professionalism, openness and improvement across the Laboratories
  • Facilitate cooperation within and between teams and divisions and actively ensure relevant professional input from others is obtained where required.
  • Lead and motivate the Laboratory Teams to achieve individual and team performance objectives and empower people by delegating responsibility appropriately.
  • Prepare an annual budget and plan with forecasts and to report any variance and contingency planning as necessary.
  • Monitor revenues and costs and consider alternative strategies and suppliers to maximise cost effectiveness and margin.
  • Work closely with the Head of Laboratory Services to improve contract terms and KPIs with all customers and ensure accurate data collection so suppliers can be held to account.
  • Address both current and likely future requirements, investigate ways to improve effectiveness, seize opportunities and anticipate risks.
  • Recruit and manage staff with the appropriate skills

Scientific and Quality

  • Ensure standards appropriate to Good Laboratory Practice and accreditation bodies are achieved and upheld.
  • Assess technical demands of the processes and assess new technology and introduce as appropriate ensuring all validations are in place.
  • Be responsible for ensuring a programme of ongoing competency assessment and taking the lead on learning and development within the Laboratory relating to scientific (technical) and non-scientific
  • Ensure that third party agreements are maintained and that appropriate SOPs are in place 
  • Ensure that relevant third parties are made aware of, and furnished with, copies of all regulatory alerts and/or serious adverse reactions without delay.
  • Ensure the Laboratory act promptly in receipt of regulatory alerts.

Experience Required

• Degree in life science.

• Any experience or understanding around cell therapies would be an advantage.

• Extensive experience in Laboratory management roles and building high performing teams
• A proven leader with the ability to inspire, empower and motivate others
• Experience in driving process improvement 
• Experience of managing budgets
• Demonstrable understanding of excellent customer service and how it impacts the business. 
• Proven experience of successful service delivery 
• Experience of setting and delivering to targets
• Ability to listen, learn and improve within the role, learn from mistakes and speak up when opportunities to improve are identified.
• Is open and honest and positively accepts constructive criticism.
• Is flexible in terms of time management and can adapt to the needs of the business.
