Description

A leading cancer charity has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Scientist to join its Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics team. As Clinical Scientist, you will be expected to use your clinical expertise in the interpretation and authorisation of HLA, virology and blood grouping results. You will also oversee validations, verifications as well as providing troubleshooting support when required. To be considered you must be HCPC registered and have experience in either H&I or with HLA. Candidates post BSHI working towards HCPC will be considered.

Their Laboratory supports four of the UK's largest HSCT programmes and works in partnership with a major London hospital, facilitating their renal transplant programme and disease association testing. This is in addition to supporting their register of unrelated adult and cord donors.

Job Profile:

•   Provide clinical oversight for the working of the laboratory

•          Provide specialist support and advice in relation to an efficient HLA typing service

•          Interpret and report results to inform haemopoietic stem cell transplants, solid organ transplants and other immunological applications

•          Liaise effectively with Supervisors on matters relating to their teams

Key Responsibilities

•          Provide clinical expertise for the authorisation and interpretation of HLA, virology and ABO results and provide troubleshooting support for others as required

•          Support the preparation of clinical reports and provide advice to colleagues as required

•          Externally report results as deemed appropriate

•          Perform testing on urgent cord sample within a short timeframe as required by a rota

•          Support the review of colleagues training and authorise their competency assessments

•          Ensure regular communication with team Supervisors and deputise for them as required

•          Oversee laboratory validations and submit for final approvals

•          Approve verifications as required

•          Efficiently perform H+I techniques when required by the team or to maintain own competencies

•          Author quality documentation related to the key responsibilities and provide valuable input into the creation and review of other quality documents including approval of reviews

•          Raise and investigate non- conformities and equipment errors as required

•          Provide troubleshooting support to enable coordination of work during and after unforeseen circumstances which have a negative impact on the planned schedules

•          Provide support and guidance for unplanned maintenance of equipment and related documentation

•          Represent the company externally by presenting work carried out, providing project overviews, sharing HLA knowledge and leading divisional laboratory tours

•          Maintain knowledge of relevant areas and clinical oversight

•          Adhere to all local health and safety policies and procedures, keeping an up to date knowledge of the area and reporting any issues

•          Actively take part in training and review of own competency requirements ensuring appropriate documentation for technical competency reviews and keeping up to date with relevant processes.

•          Provide support to colleagues as required and in relation to the standard duties

•          Any other duties as deemed appropriate by Laboratory Management

Experience and Qualifications

  • Clinical Scientist with HCPC registration          - Essential
  • Successful completion of a BSHI diploma in H&I        
  • A sound knowledge of molecular techniques used in H&I     
  • Strong understanding of requirements for the patient pathway         
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex cases and make decisions around the next steps of the testing process           
  • Demonstrable experience of overseeing process validations
  • Experience of discovering and delivering practical solutions in a proactive manner
  • Ability to prioritise workload, work well under pressure and display sound judgement and initiative.           
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.   
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office   
  • Excellent IT skills and experience of working with various databases 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills     
  • Polite and respectful nature with ability to foster good working relationships which are mutually beneficial           
  • Flexible in terms of time management and can adapt to the needs of the business.
